Design 1765 Poppy

Poppy was built for daysailing and cruising by her owner who was ready to sacrifice space in return for beauty and completeness of cruising equipment. His previous boat was a 6-meter that was converted into a cruising boat and one can see some similar characteristics in this design.

She was built by Paul Molich of Hundestad, Denmark and launched in 1965. Her construction is as typical: oak frames and mahogany planking with Everdur fasteners.

In fact this design was the impetus behind Morris Yachts' M36 daysailer. Tom Morris fell in love with the look and the boat after having restored her at his yard in the 2003. Coincidentally at the time Tom had come to New York for a book signing with Olin Stephens (All This and Sailing Too) and stopped by our office. We happened to be working on a one-off design that was reminiscent of the Poppy design. He was immediately enamored with the look.

A couple of weeks later he called us and discussions began regarding the new M36. The size was increased to achieve reasonable headroom with a modern underbody which resulted in the 36' length overall.


She has since been renamed Stormy.
